How do you work with a designer?

A majority of people who call me for the first time have never hired an Interior Designer.  It can be a little intimidating for most people at first.  Well... you don't know what you don't know.  Usually the first question I get is how the process works and what they need to do to get started.  A lot of times people right out of the gate tell me they are not rich and don't have a ton of money so would I be interested in even working with them.  Um..... YES!!  First of all not a lot of people are rolling in the dough or living lavishly.  Most people however want a beautiful and comfortable home to fit their lifestyle.  Does that mean design is inexpensive?...no.  You get what you pay for, but a designer worth her salt will help set realistic expectations for what you desire and your budget.  Maybe you don't have the budget to get everything you want at the moment, but you can make a plan of action to do things in stages.  Also a designer can keep you from making a huge mistake that will cost you more in the long run.  Like the old carpenter's axiom a "measure twice, cut once" kind of approach.

You want a designer so now what? So you have a discovery call with your designer.  That is the time for you to ask questions and see if the designer is right for you.  After the discovery call you would book an initial consultation.  Why do designers charge for those?  That is the time where I would come to your home and look to see what projects your were interested in having completed.  You get to have this designer in your home to ask questions and to get information.  You may get all of the design inspiration you need at that time.  But if not, we would come up with the package that is right for you based on your specific needs.  Maybe you are a super busy professional that wants to be completely hands off and have me come in and make your space everything you have ever dreamed.  Maybe you want a little part in the planning but need guidance on making a cohesive design.  Maybe.... you want to do it all yourself but need a professional opinion and a bit of guidance.  Lots of maybes there, but the point is there is something that will be perfect for you.  The point of having a designer is to have someone keep you from putting together pink polka dots with chartreuse swirls.  Well not really, but you get the point.  We can help you make a lovely space to fit your lifestyle.  Have a question you would like answered?  Email me and your question could become a future blog post.
